As 2012 comes to an end, we look back at the year and take a note of the most memorable tech events that caught people’s attention and those in the news for reasons ranging from the good, bad and the ugly.
The year saw increasing fights being fought over patented technologies between Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. The two warring companies filed patent infringement suits in as many as 8 countries across the globe. Apple sued Samsung for violating its patent rights by using the “Bounce Back effect”, the rounded corners, amongst many other features which it thought belonged exclusively to itself. While most of the courts gave a split decision, a US court, on 24 August gave a verdict favoring Apple and awarded it $1 billion as compensation for the patent infringement.
Apple launched the iPhone 5, which saw an unbelievable response as over two million units were booked in the first 24 hours and above five million over the weekend that followed the launch. Dimension-wise, it was the biggest iPhone released yet and offered twice as resolution as its predecessor. Though it received mostly positive reviews and tremendous market response, it was widely criticized and mocked over its glitches in its Apple Maps App and Apple was forced to issue a public statement ” recommending users to try alternate Map applications.”On the other hand, sales increased remarkably for the Samsung Galaxy S III after the iPhone 5 launch and was the best selling smartphone in Q3 of 2012 and the Galaxy S series was also the best selling smartphone series in India for the same year.
Speaking of Social Media, the year was a landmark with facebook getting its billionth user and playing in an increasingly important role in the political and the social life which can no longer be ignored. The incident of two girls from Mumbai being arrested for their remarks on facebook against a certain politician reminded everyone of the urgent need to change our cyber laws so as to avoid mis-interpretation and to be sync with the modern times.
In conclusion, 2012 can be easily said to be a very eventful year for tech lovers and was proof of the belief that technology will play an increasingly crucial role in our day-to-day life for the years to come. Wishing all readers a very happy new year 2013 and best wishes for successful endeavors.
